Branch History
The Montana Avenue Branch Library opened as a storefront library in February 1952 in a rented building at 1528-30 Montana Avenue. After seven years, the thriving Branch was in need of more space so a new facility was constructed at its current location.
Designed by Weldon Fulton, architect of the Fairview Branch, the Montana Branch opened to much fanfare on March 1, 1960. In 2002, the Branch underwent major renovations, including the addition of a community room, as part of a system-wide upgrade of the branch libraries funded in part by a bond issue passed by Santa Monica voters. The Montana Branch benefitted from an interior improvements project in 2012. The current building size is 7,517 square feet.
