    Library Director's Statement

    Library COVID-19 Policies
    Here’s what you need to know:

    • Refrain from entering the Library if you are demonstrating recognized signs of COVID-19 or other similar illness.
    • Except for children aged 2 and under, patrons must wear a face covering at all times over the nose and mouth.
    • If you are unable to wear a face covering for medical reasons, Library staff will endeavor to make accommodations.
    • Maintain a 6-foot physical distance from others that are not in your same household.
    • Practice good hygiene, such as frequent hand washing or hand sanitizing. When feasible, wash your hands with
      soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
    • Children must remain with a parent or caregiver at all times.
    • Limit your visit to 30 minutes or less.
    • Eating and drinking in the Library is prohibited.
    • Library seating is not available other than for computer stations.
    • Room rentals and group study rooms are not available.


    FAQs for Library Patrons - Updated 5/26/2021

    Is the Library open at full capacity?
    Not yet! The Main Library is operating in-person services at a reduced capacity limit. The Montana Avenue and Pico Branches
    are continuing to offer Curbside Pickup and are not open for in-person services.

    Can I enter the Library without a mask?
    Except for children aged 2 and under, patrons must wear a face covering at all times over the nose and mouth.
    If you are unable to wear a face covering for medical reasons, we will endeavor to make accommodations. 

    Is the book return open?
    Yes! Book returns are open at all Santa Monica Public Library locations.

    Are the computers available?
    Yes! Computer stations are available at the Main Library. Ten 30-minute public computers are available on the first floor
    in the Reading Room. You need a valid library card to use these stations. The four 15-minute stations need a guest pass
    from the Customer Services Desk. In the Youth Services area six computers for children and teens are available. Time limit
    for all computers is 30 minutes. Wipes and sanitizer are available to use at your convenience.

    Is the kids and teen area open?
    Youth Services at the Main Library is open for browsing by families, children, and teens but the seating and toys
    have been removed. We also request that masks are worn at all times in Youth Services for the health and safety
    of our youngest patrons. 

    Can I browse the Library stacks?
    Yes! You can browse the first-floor collections at the Main Library.

    Can I get a book from the second floor of the Main Library?
    Yes! See one of our helpful staff at the first floor Information Desk. They can locate the item and have it retrieved for you.

    Can I use the restroom?
    Yes. Restrooms are open on the first floor of the Main Library to our patrons. Restrooms in the Youth Service area
    are open to families, children, and teens.   

    Can I study, read the newspapers, or magazines while I’m in the Main Library?
    Not yet. Our seating areas, study rooms, and study tables are not currently available.

    Are fines being waived?
    Yes! Santa Monica Public Libraries are currently waiving overdue fines. Please note: This period of fine forgiveness
    only applies to overdue fines. Replacement fees for lost items remain in effect.

    Is the Library taking book donations?
    Yes! We are accepting book donations by appointment. Please ask a staff member,
    email reference@santamonica.gov, or call (310) 458-8600 for an appointment.
