  • Literacy at Santa Monica Public Library

    The Library's Literacy Education for Adults & Families (LEAF) program includes literacy services for all ages.  All programs are free and open to the public.  For more information on any of these programs, use the contact information listed.

    Adult Literacy Tutoring
    Volunteer literacy tutors work one-on-one with adult learners in a library setting. Tutors meet with learners once or twice per week to work on learning goals in 1 to 2 hour sessions.     Career Online High School
    The Santa Monica Public Library offers a limited number of scholarships for Career Online High School (COHS). Funded by the California State Library, the program offers adult students the opportunity to earn an accredited high school diploma and a career certificate.  The program is self-paced and each credit is designed to be completed in one month.  Students can take up to 18 months to complete the 18 credit program.  Learn more here or contact Stephanie Archer at stephanie.archer@santamonica.gov or (310) 458-8308.

    Citizenship Classes
    The Santa Monica Public Library hosts a series of Citizenship classes taught by Adult Education Center instructors. Classes are free and students must be 18 years or older to attend.  Community parents and SMMUSD parents have priority enrollment. Classes run from August through June.     Reading-2-Go
    Take books wherever you go. Now available for checkout, Reading-2-Go kits are themed backpacks that contain a set of five early literacy books and a CD, DVD, or toy. Kits include suggested activities to extend learning. Available in English, Spanish, and Amharic. Just search 'Reading-2-Go' in the Library's catalog.
