  • Literacy at Santa Monica Public Library

    The Library's Literacy Education for Adults & Families (LEAF) program includes literacy services for all ages.  All programs are free and open to the public.  For more information on any of the programs, use the contact information listed.

    Adult Literacy Tutoring
    Volunteer literacy tutors work one-on-one with adult learners in a library setting. Tutors meet with learners once or twice per week to work on learning goals in 1 to 2 hour sessions.     Career Online High School
    The Santa Monica Public Library offers a limited number of scholarships for Career Online High School (COHS). Funded by the California State Library, the program offers adult students the opportunity to earn an accredited high school diploma and a career certificate.  The program is self-paced and each credit is designed to be completed in one month.  Students can take up to 18 months to complete the 18 credit program.  Learn more here or contact Stephanie Archer at or (310) 458-8308.

    Computer Classes
    The Library offers free instructional classes on various topics. Classes are held at the Main and branch libraries.  Seating is limited and on a first-arrival basis.  For more information, visit or call the library where the class is being held, or call Telephone Reference at (310) 434-2608.  
    The difficulty level for each class is noted as either beginner, intermediate, or advanced:
    Beginner - no previous computer experience necessary
    Intermediate - requires proficiency with using the mouse and keyboard
    Advanced - requires proficiency with mouse and keyboard and familiarity with any relevant software (i.e., those taking Word II should have taken Word I or have some experience with using Microsoft Word)  

    ESL Classes
    The Santa Monica Public Library hosts an ongoing series of English as a Second Language (ESL) classes taught by Adult Education Center instructors.  Classes are free and students must be 18 years or older to attend.  Community parents and SMMUSD parents have priority enrollment.  Enrollment is through the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Adult Education Center, located at 2510 Lincoln Blvd., Room 203, Santa Monica, 90405.  Contact Olga Saucedo at (310) 664-6222, ext. 76203 to enroll.

    L.E.A.R.N. Homework Help 
    The L.E.A.R.N. homework help team strives to makes a difference in children’s lives and to give them the confidence they need to succeed in school.  L.E.A.R.N. offers free homework help and skills building in reading comprehension for students in grades 1 through 8. L.E.A.R.N. takes place at the Main Library on Mondays and Wednesdays, 3:30-6:00pm, and at the Pico Library on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3:30-6:00pm. It is a drop-in program, with no registration required. Volunteers work with students one-on-one for 20-minute sessions. The L.E.A.R.N. program school year calendar, including holiday breaks.     The Library invites Santa Monica families with children in the home that are ages one to four, and not part of a preschool or daycare program to take part in Reading-2-Go. Participants receive a rotation of themed kits containing books, music, and educational toys twice per month, early literacy training with a librarian, and weekly tips on making reading easy and fun texted to your smartphone.     Second Chance Learning Program: GED/HiSET Preparation Classes
    Second Chance Learning and the Library can help you earn your GED or HiSET diploma.  Commit to our free GED/HiSET preparation classes, taught by English and ESL instructor Valerie Lernihan, and we will pay your test registration fees.     Walk-In Tutoring: Basic Reading, Writing, and Online Skills
    Friendly volunteer tutors provide help with basic reading, writing, and computer skills; using the Internet to search for information; opening and using an email account; filling out online forms or applications; learning how to write a resume or cover letter; and more.  Walk-In Tutoring happen most Tuesdays, check the monthly Calendar of Events on the Library's homepage for exact dates.
