    Holds are available for pickup at the Main Library, the Montana Avenue Branch and the Pico Branch.

    How It Works

    1. Choose Items

    Place items on hold by logging in to your library account. Select a pickup location from the sites available: Main Library, Montana Avenue Branch, or Pico Branch Library. You may also request holds by calling (310) 458-8600, Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

    2. Wait for Notification

    You will receive notification that your holds are ready by your preferred method (email, text, or phone).

    3. Pick Up Your Items

    Items are available at the pickup location you selected when you reserved the items:

    Main Library or Pico Branch Library, pick up your items Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

    Montana Avenue Branch, pick up your items Monday and Wednesday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

    New! Saturday Curbside Service the first Saturday of the month at the Main Library and Pico Branch ONLY.

    Saturday, October 3 - 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
    Saturday, November 7 - 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
    Saturday, December 5 - 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

    When picking up items, bring your Library card and/or ID, please wear a mask and practice physical distancing.

    4. Where to Park and How to Pick Up

    Main Library - Park in the Main Library surface lot in reserved Curbside Pickup spaces 5-8 or wait at the designated waiting area in the north entry courtyard. If you are driving, the parking lot is accessible from 7th Street between Santa Monica Boulevard and Arizona Avenue.

    Come to the double glass doors at the Library entrance from the north courtyard, next to the parking lot. We will ask you for your library card number, so be sure to have it ready. 

    Staff will place your checked-out items on a table. Pick up your items and enjoy!

    Montana Avenue Branch - Park in the parking lot behind the Branch in one of the reserved Curbside Pickup spaces. Call (310) 458-8682 to notify staff of your arrival. We will ask you for your library card number, so be sure to have it ready.

    Walk to the front entrance of the Library and wait in the designated area. Staff will place your checked-out items on a table. Once they step back take your items and enjoy!

    Pico Branch - Park in either of the two parking lots at the Virginia Avenue Park. Parking lots are accessible from Pico Boulevard (front lot) and Virginia Avenue (back lot). Call (310) 458-8684 to notify staff of your arrival. We will ask you for your library card number, so be sure to have it ready. 

    Walk to the front entrance of the Library and wait in the designated area. Staff will place your checked-out items on a table. Once they step back take your items and enjoy!

    5. Return Items

    Return items by their due date to any Santa Monica Public Library book drop.


    Frequently Asked Questions

    How long will you hold my items?
    Items will be held for 14 days after they’re ready for pickup.

    Can I pick up my holds at any library location?
    Currently, curbside pickup is available at the Main Library, Montana Avenue Branch, and Pico Branch Library.

    When are my items checked out to me?
    Items are checked out to you upon your arrival. Your Library card, Library card number and/or ID are required to check out Library materials.

    I don’t have a mobile phone. How do I alert staff that I’m at the library?
    When you arrive, please find the designated signage for physical distancing cues and wait for the next available staff member. Staff will ask you for you Library card or ID.

    I returned my library materials yesterday. Why are they still checked out to me?
    Library materials are quarantined for 5 days after they’re returned. When checked in, they’ll be backdated to reflect the actual date returned. No late fees will be charged, as long as materials were returned on or before the due date. Additionally, the Santa Monica Public Library does not charge overdue fines to youth (ages 0-18) cardholders.

    My library card is expired. Can I still put a hold on items?
    Please call (310) 458-8600, Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. to speak with staff about renewing your library card.

    I have fines. Can I pay them during my curbside pickup?
    Curbside pickup is contactless, and in-person account services are not available at this time. Fines may be paid online. You may also discuss fines or other account issues by calling (310) 458-8600.

    Can I choose which items to pick up? I have 10 items ready, but I don’t want them all right now.
    Due to space limitations, all items must be picked up during curbside.

    Can I drop off donations?
    To ensure the health and safety of library staff, we are not currently accepting donations.

    When will we be allowed back into the library?
    To control the spread of COVID-19, the Library buildings remain closed to the public until further notice.

    The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health announced in May 2020 that public libraries may reopen for curbside service. The City will soon share more information about when the Santa Monica Public Library can safely reopen under the new health guidelines. We appreciate your flexibility and patience as we move forward in reopening library services to the community.
