    How It Works

    1. Choose Items

    Place items on hold by logging in to your library account. Select a pickup location from the sites available: Montana Avenue Branch or Pico Branch Library. You may also request holds by calling (310) 458-8600 during operational hours.

    2. Wait for Notification

    You will receive notification that your holds are ready by your preferred method (email, text, or phone).

    3. Pick Up Your Items

    Items are available at the pickup location you selected when you reserved the items: 

    Pico Branch
    Tuesday - Wednesday, Friday, and the first Saturday of the month: 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
    Thursday: 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

    Montana Avenue Branch 
    Tuesday: 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
    Thursday: 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

    Saturday Curbside Service the first Saturday of the month at the Pico Branch ONLY.

    Saturday, October 2 - 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
    Saturday, November 6 - 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
    Saturday, December 4 - 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

    When picking up items, bring your Library card and/or ID. Please wear a mask and practice physical distancing.

    4. Where to Park and How to Pick Up

    Montana Avenue Branch - Park in the parking lot behind the Branch in one of the reserved Curbside Pickup spaces. Call (310) 458-8682 to notify staff of your arrival. We will ask you for your library card number, so be sure to have it ready.

    Walk to the front entrance of the Library and wait in the designated area. Staff will place your checked-out items on a table. Once they step back take your items and enjoy!

    Pico Branch - Park in either of the two parking lots at the Virginia Avenue Park. Parking lots are accessible from Pico Boulevard (front lot) and Virginia Avenue (back lot). Call (310) 458-8684 to notify staff of your arrival. We will ask you for your library card number, so be sure to have it ready. 

    Walk to the front entrance of the Library and wait in the designated area. Staff will place your checked-out items on a table. Once they step back take your items and enjoy!

    5. Return Items

    Return items by their due date to any Santa Monica Public Library book drop.


    Frequently Asked Questions

    How long will you hold my items?
    Items will be held for 10 days after they’re ready for pickup at the Main Library and the Pico Branch. Items are held for 14 days at the Montana Avenue Branch.

    When are my items checked out to me?
    Items are checked out upon your arrival at the Montana Avenue Branch and Pico Branch. Items at the Main Library and Ocean Park Branch still require checkout. Please see a staff member (Main Library only) or visit a Self-Checkout station to checkout your items.

    I don’t have a mobile phone. How do I alert staff that I’m at the library?
    When you arrive, please find the designated signage for physical distancing cues and wait for the next available staff member. Staff will ask you for your Library card or ID.

    I returned my library materials yesterday. Why are they still checked out to me?
    Due to limited staffing, it may take up to 5-7 days to get items checked in at our closed branches. No late fees will be charged in 2021, however, items overdue for 42 days or more are considered lost. Accounts with lost items are blocked until the item is returned or paid for in full. 

    My library card is expired. How can I renew my card?
    Library cards may be renewed for two years by coming to the Main Library, Montana Avenue Branch, or the Pico Branch during operating hours. Please bring your Library card, valid photo ID, and proof of address. To renew a card, all charges on the account must be settled first.

    I have fines. Can I pay them during my curbside pickup?
    Fines may be paid online or in-person at the Main Library. You may also discuss fines or other account issues by calling (310) 458-8600.

    Can I drop off donations?
    Donations are accepted at the Main Library on Fridays by appointment only. To schedule an appointment, call (310) 458-8600 Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., or send an email to reference@santamonica.gov.

    On your appointment day and time, bring your donations to the 7th Street entrance of the Main Library, located next to the Santa Monica History Museum.

    When will we be allowed back into the Library?
    The Main Library is open for limited in-person services. The Ocean Park Branch offers Self-Service Hours for approved library card holders. The Montana Avenue Branch and the Pico Branch will continue to offer curbside pickup service.
