Shut-In Service - Volunteers, who are interested in books and people, can directly aid Santa Monica's homebound residents. Volunteers regularly select and deliver library materials several hours every two weeks. Visits may vary from a few minutes to 30 minutes or more and are eagerly anticipated by our homebound patrons. Library Guide - Guides are stationed in the lobby of the Main Library. They circulate and answer very general questions about the Library's collection, direct Library visitors to various areas within the Library, and assist users with self checkout. Volunteers are needed for 2 to 3 hours shifts during hours the Library is open. Training is provided prior to serving as a Guide. Six months minimum commitment. Santa Monica Reads Book Discussion Group Leader - Get involved in the annual Santa Monica Reads by volunteering to become a discussion group leader. Toward the end of each year, the Library recruits volunteers for this annual series. The Library will train you, and you'll have an opportunity to lead public book discussions on the featured book at libraries, bookstores and coffeehouses. Knitting Club - Fairview Branch volunteers help beginning knitters get started and oversee projects. Mondays from 5 - 6:30 p.m. 10 hour minimum commitment.
Library Helpers - Students needing to complete community service requirements are invited to volunteer. Library Helpers work on a variety of clerical tasks helping to maintain the collection and prepare materials for children’s programs. Students work one day a week for two hours after school until their community service requirement is completed. They must be in at least eighth grade.
