    The Library has compiled a list of Resources for Nonprofits for those seeking funding.

    As an affiliate of Candid, the merged nonprofit of Foundation Center and GuideStar, the Santa Monica Public Library maintains a core collection of grants-related books and provides access to Foundation Directory Online Professional and Grants to Individuals Online, Candid's databases for grants seekers. Available only in the Main Library.


    For Nonprofits - Foundation Directory Online Professional includes over 100,000 grantmaker profiles, over 2.4 million records in the Grants database, interactive maps and charts displaying grants, and a keyword-searchable 990s database.

    For Individuals - Grants to Individuals Online is Candid's database for individual grant seekers.

    See Candid’s “Getting Started for Individual Grantseekers” page for advice and topical resource lists for individual grantseekers. The  “Guide to Fiscal Sponsorship” provides a detailed look at the possibilities for individual grantseekers to affiliate with an organization or obtain a fiscal sponsor.

    The Foundation Center in New York is a national organization that provides education and training about grant seeking, philanthropy, and foundations in the United States. The site provides advice to grant seekers, listings of workshops and classes including training online, and topical resource lists for further information. It includes a directory with contact information only of foundations searchable by foundation name. It also includes recent IRS 990 & 990-PF reports searchable by foundation name.

    GuideStar
    Searchable database of U.S. nonprofit organizations.  Listings include information on background, mission, goals, and finances.  Some listings provide copies of their annual IRS Form 990.

    Strengthen Los Angeles communities through effective philanthropy and civic engagement.

    Charity Navigator
    Helps potential donors make intelligent giving decisions by providing independent evaluations of the financial health of the largest US charities.  Find detailed, easy to understand reports on over 3400 charities that analyze fundraising, program and administration expenses.  Also find ratings and comparisons with like organizations. 

    Give.org
    Sponsored by the Better Business Bureau.  Find background and financial information on dozens of "nationally soliciting charitable organizations."

    Registry of Charitable Trusts
    From the State of California Department of Justice, Office of the Attorney General, search the files of the Registry of Charitable Trusts.

    IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search
    Cumulative List of Organizations described in Section 170(c) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986. Provides only name of organization, city, state and country.

    Professional Organizations and Training

    Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance is “a guide to grants offered by every department of the federal government available to State and local governments (including the District of Columbia); federally recognized Indian tribal governments; Territories (and possessions) of the United States; domestic public, quasi-public, and private profit and nonprofit organizations and institutions; specialized groups; and individuals.

    Center for Nonprofit Management
    Located in downtown Los Angeles, the Center fosters healthy neighborhoods and communities by improving the performance of nonprofit organizations addressing critical issues and serving underserved populations.  The Center offers classes in various topics related to nonprofit management and grants.  The Center’s Nonprofit Resource Library has an extensive collection of resources for nonprofit management, philanthropy, sector information, career planning, and funding research.

    Council on Foundations (COF)
    COF is a membership organization of more than 2,000 grantmaking foundations and giving programs worldwide. The Council provides leadership expertise, legal information and networking opportunities to their members and to the general public.

    Grantsmanship Center
    This is a Los Angeles based organization whose purpose is to offer training in grant seeking and to provide low-cost publications to nonprofit organizations and government agencies.  The Grantsmanship Training Program covers all aspects of researching grant opportunities, writing grant proposals and negotiating with funding sources.

    The technology place for nonprofits.  The “Techsoup Stock” page lists donated and discounted technology products for nonprofit organizations and public libraries.

    Fellowships, Scholarships & Financial Aid

    FinAid, the Smart Student Guide to Financial Aid: Includes a free searchable guide to student financial aid and scholarships, financial aid calculators, and links to financial aid forms.

    FAFSA Free Application for Student Aid. Financial aid for students planning post-secondary education. Site includes FAFSA forms and information about important deadlines.

    U.S. Department of Education Financial Aid. The starting point for information on federal student financial assistance, with annotated lists of resources. Includes information on preparing for higher education, choosing a school, applying for admission, types of funding, and repaying loans. Federal Student Aid, part of the Department of Education. Concentrates on planning, selecting, and applying for financial aid.

    Government Benefits

    If you are need of personal financial assistance such as Social Security/Supplemental Security Income, Medicaid or State Social Services, you can find help here. The site is a partnership of government organizations working together to provide confidential, free, online benefit information.

    Small Business Loans

    Small Business Administration (SBA)
    Full service information on government loan and assistance programs, financing tutorials, and more.  The SBA does not offer grants to start or expand small businesses, though it does offer a wide variety of loan programs. There are some grants available to organizations that provide small business management, technical, or financial assistance.
