  Friends of the Santa Monica Public Library

The Friends is a dynamic organization supporting the Library through fundraising and volunteer activities.  Its purpose is to increase public interest in the Library by focusing attention on its facilities, services and needs; to encourage gifts, endowments and bequests for the enrichment of the Library’s collections; and in other ways to contribute to the cultural life of Santa Monica.

JULY NEWS

So much is going on in the Friends of the Santa Monica Public Library Book Store during July:

  • Summer reading incentive: All fiction, hard cover and paperback, is 50% off. $1.00 books are 50 cents. 50 cents books are 25 cents. Buy a pile and get out the hammock.

  • Happy 4th: The theme this month on the Perennial Place blue cart and the window displays is USA. History and Politics books are half-price this month in honor of this theme. Be sure to take a look.

  • Special Sale Saturday July 19: This sale will include higher value books in the following categories: art, travel, photography, history, cooking, coffee tables books, first editions, signed books, literature, unusual one-of-a-kind books, and much more for you to explore! Books will be priced at $5 and up. Sale runs from 11a.m. to 2 p.m.
     

Large-print: Many patrons have been interested in large-print books, but our supply was limited. We are pleased to announce that we now have a full cart for your perusal.

Check out the Perennial Place blue cart and the window displays for an assortment of books from the sale categories.

Be sure to purchase the new Santa Monica Public Library mint-green environmentally-friendly book bags, $1.00 each. Use them for groceries, books, picnics, baseballs, and more. Buy several for your father or new grad to take to the beach.

Drop by soon to get the best selection. Bookstore hours are Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday from 11-4:30, Sunday 1:30-4:30, closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Location is on the left as you enter through the north entrance of the Main Library at 601 Santa Monica Boulevard.

If…you are wondering where the money goes, here’s what your purchases have made possible in your library:

  • Movie site licenses so the library can offer film screenings

  • Summer reading program for students

  • Funds for each branch for general use

  • Support of the Citywide Reads program

  • Support of the community public lecture program

  • Digital work on photographic collection of old Outlook and Pacific Palisades photos

  • Furniture for branch libraries

  • Support for reading collections for teens

  • Equipment and materials not available otherwise, e.g. reading aids for the visually disabled.
  • Funds for special services such as the "Shutin Service," which brings the Library to those unable to leave home.
  • Used book sales, the major fund-raising activity.
  • Recognition of Library volunteers.
