Library
Guide -
Guides are stationed in the lobby of the Main
Library. They circulate and answer very general
questions about the Library's collection, direct
Library visitors to various areas within the
Library, and assist users with self checkout.
Volunteers are needed for 2 to 3 hours shifts during
hours the Library is open. Training is
provided prior to serving as a Guide.

Shut-In Service -
Volunteers, who are interested in books and
people, can directly aid Santa Monica's
homebound residents. Volunteers regularly select
and deliver library materials several hours
every two weeks. Visits may vary from a few
minutes to thirty minutes or more and are
eagerly anticipated by our homebound patrons.

Homework Tutors
- Fairview Branch volunteer tutors will
assist young students with homework assignments,
reading, comprehension, writing and math. Volunteers will be placed with a child and meet once
a week at the library. Tutors can select
the day and time, Monday or Wednesday between
3:30 – 7p.m. Tutoring begins during October and
continues throughout the academic year. 20
hour minimum commitment.*
Knitting Club
- Fairview Branch volunteers will help beginning
knitters to get started and oversee projects.
Mondays from 5 - 6:30 p.m.
10
hour minimum commitment.*
Math Coaches
- Fairview Branch volunteers will engage young
students in special math games. Full series
commitment.*
Series 1: Oct 7 - Nov 25. Orientation Sept 30
from 2 - 3:30 p.m.
Series 2: Jan 6 - Feb 24. Orientation Dec 30
from 2 - 3:30 p.m.

Volunteers age 18 and over are required to be
fingerprinted as part of a background check before
they can work with children. For more

Friends of the Santa Monica Public Library
- The Friends of SMPL is a
dynamic organization supporting the Library
through fundraising and volunteer activities.
Its purpose is to increase public interest in
the Library by focusing
attention on the Library’s facilities, services
and needs; to encourage gifts, endowments and
bequests for the enrichment of the Library’s
collections; and in other ways to contribute to
the cultural life of Santa Monica. For

Book Discussion Group Leader -
Volunteers recruited each winter for spring events. Get involved in
the annual Santa Monica Citywide Reads by
volunteering to become a discussion group leader.
The Library will train you, and you'll have an
opportunity to lead book discussions on the featured
book for the public
at libraries, bookstores and coffeehouses.

Library Docents

This exciting new volunteer opportunity was created
to introduce the community to all of the unique
features of the new Main Library. Volunteers in
this program are trained to lead tours of the
library. Successful completion of an orientation
and five training sessions are required for this
program. Time commitment is four hours a month for
a minimum of one year.
The initial response to this position was so
positive that we've instituted a waiting list.
